Cake Kato
[Take-out cakes from a long-established Western confectionery shop]
Founded in 1913 as a confectionery business, this long-established store was reopened during the war by the second generation owner in a store in Katahara-cho, which would later become the basis for the current Kato Cakes. Today, the store is lined with carefully selected Western sweets, including colorful cakes, baked goods, and chocolates, made by the third generation owner.
While the shortcake and chocolate cake are also popular, the most popular item is the tart that uses a generous amount of seasonal fruit. They are particular about the fruits they use. They mainly purchase fruits from Yanagawa, but also from neighboring areas, so they are able to use plenty of fresh seasonal fruits. They also focus on local production and consumption, and sometimes purchase tasty non-standard fruits (different sizes) directly from farmers. Among their baked goods, the cantucci named “Katoucci” is the most popular. The name is said to have come from a cute name that Kato’s child mispronounced. It is a popular treat with a crunchy texture and just the right amount of sweetness.
We recommend making a reservation for birthday cakes. There are some cakes available in store for those who need them suddenly, but “if you have a preference, please let us know when you make your reservation.” This is a Western-style confectionery shop with roots in the local area, with many customers buying cakes as gifts as well as for their own home.
