The exterior of the restaurant features white walls and red brick windows. When you enter the restaurant, you will also see a red brick wall in front. “I like real red bricks,” says the manager, a very friendly woman with a lovely smile. The restaurant opened in December 2018. This was the manager’s first time running a restaurant, but since there were few skewered fried food restaurants in Yanagawa City, she decided to “give it a try” and open a restaurant. The name “ageage” (age-age) is chosen not only because the restaurant’s main menu item is skewered fried food, but also because it is easy to remember and represents the good economic situation, which is also related to the uplifting “age-age” (age-age). Many of the customers who visit the restaurant are locals, and the restaurant is supported by a wide range of generations, with regulars in their 40s and 50s and even 80s.

The vegetables used for the skewers are fresh and locally grown. To prevent the skewers from becoming too oily, the unique batter made from finely crushed bread crumbs brings out the flavor of the ingredients. On the day we visited, we had deep-fried vegetables such as lotus root, shiitake mushrooms, king oyster mushrooms, and shishito peppers, as well as quail eggs and pork belly. The crisp batter did not overpower the flavor of the ingredients, and we felt like we could eat as much as we wanted. In addition to the deep-fried skewers, the restaurant also has other specialties. The slow-cooked beef tendon stew and stir-fried horumon are popular and highly ordered dishes. As for drinks, sours made from frozen fruits such as mango, orange, and lemon served in glasses are also popular.

Thanks to the manager’s personality, the restaurant has a friendly atmosphere that makes it easy for both men and women to enter alone. The customers in the restaurant are also friendly with each other. Fun conversations are often exchanged with the manager in between. “When I see customers who met for the first time at the restaurant becoming friends, I feel glad that I opened the restaurant and feel happy.” This is a wonderful restaurant where the manager’s good taste shines through in the color scheme of the chairs inside the restaurant and the patterns on the plates that are casually served.
