Steak House Gyutei
[Yanagawa’s hidden soul food “Gyu-tei Steak”]
The restaurant opened in 1985. Apparently steakhouses were rare in Yanagawa at the time. “We still serve 130-150 gram Bungo beef sirloin steaks at the same price today,” says the owner. As the couple has been running the restaurant for a long time, their first regular customers have gotten married and started coming with their children, and those children have grown up and started families, and “recently we often have three generations of customers coming to the restaurant together.”
The reason for its popularity across generations is the deliciousness of the meat, as well as the special steak sauce made by the owner. There are also many fans of the salads, which are popular for their homemade dressings. “Even children who normally don’t eat vegetables eat all the vegetables with our dressing. We carefully consider the order in which we mix the ingredients,” says the owner. There are many memories from being in business for so long, but the most memorable was a request from a customer who said, “My hospitalized parent wants to eat Gyu-tei’s meat. Can you make it for me?” He said, thinking of the face of a regular customer who was hospitalized, “I cut the steak into cubes and gave it to them.” From the elderly to children, everyone is fascinated by its deliciousness. Gyu-tei’s steak is truly the hidden soul food of Yanagawa.
Many of the interior furnishings have been there since the restaurant first opened. The steaks served in this nostalgic space reminiscent of the Showa era must be a secret delicacy that Yanagawa residents don’t want to share with anyone.
