[Hot steamed food served in a Japanese-style room with a relaxing atmosphere]
Founded 100 years ago, this is a long-established eel restaurant located along the main road that can be considered the entrance to Yanagawa. More than half of the customers are repeat customers from both inside and outside Yanagawa city.
A popular menu item is the steamed eel set meal (above), which is served in a vessel inspired by a river boat. The boat-shaped vessel really gets you in the Yanagawa mood. Other dishes include the special steamer, which has kabayaki eel sandwiched between rice, and shirayaki. There are also plenty of other dishes on the menu, such as eel bones and vinegared dishes, which go well with alcohol. For the steamed eel, domestically produced eels are dipped in sauce and carefully grilled one by one over binchotan charcoal to remove any unpleasant odor and give them a fluffy texture. The fluffy eel and rice soaked in sauce are then steamed slowly in a bamboo steamer. The balance of the kabayaki eel and the sauce on the rice is the secret to the deliciousness of the steamed eel. By steaming thoroughly, the rice becomes chewier.
They are also particular about the rice they use, and for the rice steamed in a bamboo steamer, they use a type that is chewy and easy to mix with the sauce, while for the rice they use, they use a type that allows you to enjoy the original taste of white rice, and both are carefully selected varieties of delicious rice. They take the time to wash the rice and cook it, so that you can enjoy delicious rice.
The sauce used at the restaurant’s founding has been gradually adapted to modern tastes while still adding to it. By thoroughly marinating the eel before grilling it, the restaurant is able to bring out the natural flavor of the eel to the fullest. The restaurant has many fans among river boatmen, and in addition to those who come on recommendation, the restaurant also attracts many tourists. With the carefully prepared dishes, I felt I could understand why the restaurant has been loved for so long.
