Shichifuku Ramen
[A long-established ramen shop in Yanagawa, ahead of its time: Shichifuku-ryu]
“Founded in Yanagawa City in January 1972 after completing training in Kurume” is the history of the shop that is written on a plaque at the entrance. Until moving to its current location in October 1995, the shop was located near Yanagawa City Hall. It was a ramen shop that mainly did delivery, and it delivered orders not only from the government office but also from businesses in the surrounding area. As it was one of the few ramen shops in Yanagawa, it was apparently very busy at lunchtime. “My parents made the ramen, and my brother and I delivered it. We delivered, collected the empty dishes, cleaned up, delivered again…we barely had time to catch our breath every day,” the manager said, looking back on those days.
They currently serve tonkotsu ramen in a location away from the city center. Pickled ginger is included from the start, which is Shichifuku’s style. “When we deliver, we add pepper and pickled ginger from the beginning. We continue to use the same method we used when we were delivering, even in our current restaurant,” they said. We had the ramen and horumon, which are both popular at the restaurant. Both were topped with plenty of fresh green onions and were delicious.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, customers can no longer add pickled ginger to their ramen as they wish from the table. In light of this, Shichifuku-ryu may be a good fit for the current times.
